Olympia Handmade

Olympia Handmade is Official!!!

Many of you know that I spend most of my free time crafting and some of you have even made purchases from my Etsy shop or at local craft fairs. What most of you don’t know is that I’ve taken a long hard look at my life and have been praying about a lot of areas over the last year or so. Last summer I began to have a strong desire to build my own business. At the time, I wasn’t sure what that meant and, frankly, I was terrified. I’ve been praying more in-depth about the situation over the last couple of months and the desire has only gotten stronger. I decided to focus most of my energy toward building my handmade /craft business. I have often talked about this and even began to write out a business plan, but I never really seemed to follow through.

Well, I’m pleased to announce that I gave myself a swift kick in the pants and am SERIOUS about building my own handmade business. I don’t have a solid business plan yet (this is something I’m working on and would happily welcome advice), but I finally took the step of registering for a business license. I received notification tonight that my business is officially registered as “Olympia Handmade” and I am authorized to conduct business in WA! I am still keeping my day job, which will make things difficult but provide some financial stability while I operate my business on nights and weekends. This is going to be a lot of work, but I’m really looking forward to the adventure! Thank you all so much for your support! You have no idea how much your encouragement means to me.

Pretty Ruffles Pillow

While shopping at a thrift store, I came across some beautiful lavender colored fabric. I’m not sure what type of fabric it is, but it has a nice feel and beautiful color. Originally, I thought I would use it for an apron, but decided to make some nice large fluffy pillows to spruce up the sofa. I had an idea to do fun strips of ruffles all over the front side of the pillow and am very pleased with the results. In fact, I’m quite excited with them. Admittedly, I did a little happy dance. :)

I have a bit of an addiction to craft supplies. I can’t help it. I can’t pass up a good sale! Any time I see fabric, yarn, beads or buttons on sale I HAVE to stock up! The problem is, I soon find myself spending hundreds of dollars on craft supplies I never use. I don’t know how it happens, at the time of purchase I have every intention of using it right away. I even make a PLAN for what handmade goody I am going to make with it, but then life happens, my craft project gets pushed aside, and I suddenly have a closet full of craft supplies and I don’t even know why I needed them in the first place! Well, this project came from the inspiration of having too much fabric that I didn’t know what to do with! :)

For some unforeseen reason, I have ended up with a couple yards of random fleece. I’m sure I purchased it to make a handmade gift for someone and choose the colors specifically for the recipient. What am I going to do with fleece, anyway? Winter is half way over, so there is no point in making blankets, scarves or hats. It’s time to start crafting for Spring and Summer. Then, I had a little light bulb moment! Spring equals “Spring Cleaning”. What sort of handmade cleaning supply can I make? – A DUSTING MITT!

As it turns out, fleece is an excellent material for attracting dust like a magnet. I can use my surplus fabric to make something useful and reusable. I am a genius! haha On my first attempt, I accidentally made a left-handed dusting mitt, but after I figured out my design, it was easy to whip out another one! They’re kind of crazy looking and I feel like I should glue wiggly eyes on them so they can be a puppet! These handmade dusting mitts are super soft and the funky pattern is way more fun than the standard orange or blue. :) What do you think? I think this was a successful use of my surplus fabric. I’ll probably make several more and list them in my Etsy shop. :) Next up on the “Spring Cleaning” theme is adorable handmade aprons!
