12 Clever Uses for Duct Tape

I know you can fix just about any problem with a little duct tape and a spritz of Windex, but what about using duct tape for it’s aesthetic qualities rather than it’s functionality? I’ve searched Etsy for the most funky and beautiful duct tape creations. How do you like to use duct tape?

Where’s Christiana?

Some of you may be wondering why I haven’t posted over the last few months. Truth be told, I was on a bit of an unexpected hiatus. My personal life was busy to the point of being overwhelming. Between baby showers, graduations, birthdays, bridal showers, weddings, and various other events I simply haven’t had a spare moment! On top of all of this, I had to prepare and move to a new living situation with a new room mate and boy was it a lot of WORK! Sadly, Olympia Handmade suffered as a result of me over-committing myself when I should have been better about prioritizing. BUT, now I’m back and Olympia Handmade will be much more active! :)

I recently lost my job at the design firm I’ve worked for over the past 4 years. It’s sad, but I’m really excited about the opportunity to create handmade gifts and home decor full time! I’m pursuing the option of focusing on Olympia Handmade and building my business so that I don’t have to pursue other employment. I’m not sure how long this will last, but I’m jumping on the opportunity to focus on my handmade business before pursuing conventional employment. This means more blog posts, more tutorials, and more new products for you to enjoy! It also means I’ll be having a super special promotion soon to celebrate my choice to focus on Olympia Handmade full time! Be sure to subscribe to be the first to hear about news and special sales. :)

Paper Mache

I had some leftover balloons from a party and decided to do some paper mache. I forgot how much I enjoy it! I’ve always been intrigued by making beautiful things out of every day items and paper is no exception. I LOVE recycling my own paper. Generally, I make handmade paper for gift tags or lovely handmade journals, but paper mache is a nice change of pace. It’s so easy, too! All you need is a balloon, some flour, water, salt, and newspaper and you’re good to go! :) Right now, my project is in process because it takes a lot of time to dry between layers. I plan on wrapping it up this weekend and turning these paper newspaper balls into beautiful bowls and baskets. More photos coming soon!

Olympia Handmade

Olympia Handmade is Official!!!

Many of you know that I spend most of my free time crafting and some of you have even made purchases from my Etsy shop or at local craft fairs. What most of you don’t know is that I’ve taken a long hard look at my life and have been praying about a lot of areas over the last year or so. Last summer I began to have a strong desire to build my own business. At the time, I wasn’t sure what that meant and, frankly, I was terrified. I’ve been praying more in-depth about the situation over the last couple of months and the desire has only gotten stronger. I decided to focus most of my energy toward building my handmade /craft business. I have often talked about this and even began to write out a business plan, but I never really seemed to follow through.

Well, I’m pleased to announce that I gave myself a swift kick in the pants and am SERIOUS about building my own handmade business. I don’t have a solid business plan yet (this is something I’m working on and would happily welcome advice), but I finally took the step of registering for a business license. I received notification tonight that my business is officially registered as “Olympia Handmade” and I am authorized to conduct business in WA! I am still keeping my day job, which will make things difficult but provide some financial stability while I operate my business on nights and weekends. This is going to be a lot of work, but I’m really looking forward to the adventure! Thank you all so much for your support! You have no idea how much your encouragement means to me.

Pretty Ruffles Pillow

While shopping at a thrift store, I came across some beautiful lavender colored fabric. I’m not sure what type of fabric it is, but it has a nice feel and beautiful color. Originally, I thought I would use it for an apron, but decided to make some nice large fluffy pillows to spruce up the sofa. I had an idea to do fun strips of ruffles all over the front side of the pillow and am very pleased with the results. In fact, I’m quite excited with them. Admittedly, I did a little happy dance. :)
